Salida, CO musician David Tipton plays a unique stringed instrument called the Chapman Stick. He performs rich sounding arrangements of popular tunes and original compositions regularly throughout Colorado.
The Stick® is a unique musical instrument invented by Emmett Chapman in 1969. It consists of a long fretboard with ten or twelve strings spanning a bass and guitar range. Sound is produced when the strings are “tapped” against the frets by the fingers. An electronic pickup is used to amplify the sounds. This technique allows the musician to use both hands to play multiple parts, such as bass lines, melody lines, and chords, much like a pianist plays. All this while having the expressive subtleties that strings allow, such as vibrato, bends, slides, pull-offs, etc. From deep growing bass notes to high shimmering pitches, the Stick offers an extended range that most other stringed instrument barely cover.
